The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
