Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
